Dry vs dehydrated skin: how to tell the difference
They sound like the same thing, and they can feel the same too. But dry skin and dehydrated skin need different care, and knowing which one you have makes choosing products much easier.

The short answer
Dry skin is a skin type: it naturally makes less oil, so it struggles to hold on to moisture. Dehydrated skin is a skin condition: it is short of water, and it can happen to anyone, even people with oily skin. You can also have both at the same time.
Signs of dry skin
- Flaky skin
- Rough texture
- A tight feeling
- Itchiness
- A dull-looking complexion
- Visible dry patches
- Fine lines that look more noticeable
Dry skin often feels uncomfortable most of the time, not only after washing, and it tends to look much the same from one week to the next.
Signs of dehydrated skin
- A tight feeling
- A dull complexion
- Fine lines
- Skin that looks less plump
- Skin that feels rough
- Increased sensitivity
- Makeup that looks patchy or cakey
- More oil than usual
That last one surprises people. When skin is short of water it can try to make up for it by producing more oil, so you can feel oily and tight at the same time.
Why cold weather makes it worse
Low temperatures can affect the skin far beyond simple dryness. Cold air holds less moisture, wind carries it away, and indoor heating dries the air even further. Long, hot showers feel wonderful in winter but can leave skin tighter afterwards. That is why so many people notice both dryness and dehydration in the colder months.
How to care for dry skin
Dry skin needs richer care that replaces what is missing and slows down moisture loss.
- Cleanse gently with a facial cleanser, not soap.
- Use a toner such as Radiant Bloom to add a first layer of hydration.
- Finish with a nourishing moisturiser like Silken Dew, morning and evening.
- On extra-dry days, press in a few drops of Golden Drop facial oil.
How to care for dehydrated skin
Dehydrated skin needs water, plus ingredients that attract and hold it.
- Apply a hyaluronic acid serum such as Timeless to slightly damp skin.
- Follow with moisturiser to lock that hydration in.
- Drink enough water, and go easy on long, hot showers.
- Do not strip oily but dehydrated skin with harsh products, as that can make things worse.
